JUNE 8, 2010

 

The June 8, 2010 meeting of the Chelsea Rotary Club was called to order by President Brian.  PP Bruce offered the blessing, with the assistance of several Club members and PP Joe lead the singing of “God Bless America”.  There were 26 members present and 3 guests.  Late arrivals were Joe P., Christian, Fella, PP Jim and Juan.  PP Bob left early.

 

Secretary Paula announced the following birthdays: Secretary Paula, Bob R. and Gladys.  She announced the following Rotary anniversaries: Lois 21 years, PP Barry 15 years, Ken 8 years, Mark, PP Patrick and Bill 7 years, Brian K. and Secretary Paula 2 years and Bob R. 1 year.  There were 3 guests attending the meeting;  PP Allan introduced John Tryder from East Pointe Nursing Home.  Wilson Cardwell from Everybody Wins and Rev. Whitney were guests of the Club.

 

wILSON

 

President Brian introduced Juan who presented 70 books to Wilson Cardwell for the Everybody Wins program.  We have several members who participate in the Everybody Wins program by reading to children at the elementary school complex.  The books were donated the Share Literacy Program.  The books were in English and Spanish so the majority of the children will be able to utilize the books.

 

SSA Mitch took center stage and announced the general fine was the standard no pins or badges and requested everyone to be generous.

 

The following happy/sad fines were paid:

 

Ken was happy to spend the weekend on his boat after helping his friends deliver their boats on previous weekends.

 

PP Saritin was happy to have spent a good weekend with family.

 

Mark was happy for the Celtics’ win Sunday.

 

Juan was happy his daughter’s surgery was successful and to have Wilson present.

 

PP Brian and his wife had to juggle the week as their child care provider had a baby.

 

PP Jim had a fun time in Las Vegas.

 

Joe was late, had a vacation in Florida but did not catch many fish.

 

Bob R. was happy he woke up this morning.

 

Jonathan informed the Club his grandmother passed away after a full life.

 

PP Barry paid for his 15th Rotary anniversary since he never made 15 wedding anniversaries, anticipation of a softball victory and his perfect batting average.

 

Fella celebrated taking his daughter to the ballet.

 

PP Joe was sad about City’s loss with the passing of Leo Mahoney.

 

PP Bob paid for some comments about PP Barry’s new look.  We will not divulge neither PP Bob’s nor Lois’s comments.

 

Lois paid for her 21 years in Rotary.

 

Secretary Paula paid for missed meeting, vacation on the Cape, having to watch the Celtics from her bedroom because the neighbors we too noisy and the police did not respond to her calls to quiet the neighborhood.

 

SSA Mitch paid for Sunday Celtics’ win and anticipated softball victory.

 

 

Rev. Whitley

 

PP Allan inducted our newest member Rev. Sandra Whitley from the People’s AME Church on Bellingham Street.  Rev. Sandra was sponsored by President Brian.

 

 

Bob R

 

Bob Richmond gave his vocational.  Bob was born in Chelsea and raised in Revere.  He spent 3 years at UNH before embarking on a 2 year vacation courtesy of the US Army.  Upon returning from military service Bob earned his degree from BU.  He then joined the Everett school system where spent the next 35 years.  27 years were spent teaching 9th grade science.  Bob also spent 20 years officiating high school baseball and football.  Bob became active in Community Theater and stared in several productions.  He has spent the last 20 years with the Chelsea Jewish Foundation.  Bob has really enjoyed his 1st year in Rotary.

 

The membership approved the recommendations of the Board to donate $2,500 to the local Salvation Army’s Kid Club for library books and $1,000 for the September 2010 Taste of Chelsea.

 

The raffle was $143 and PP Rick and Bob R. were the unlucky non-winners.

Softball Notes:

 

            The softball team beat Beverly 18 to 8 for its 1st victory of the season. 

            PP Barry was the winning pitcher and was 1 for 1 with 3 walks to keep his

perfect batting average.

            6/23/2010 –     Lawrence at Chelsea

 

            6/30/2010 –     Annual softball picnic at Danvers.  All Rotarians and their                                                family and friends are invited.
